In our DPC section of the Manifesto (link to DPC public webpage), we give examples of various forms a club can take i.e. Caregivers Club, but practically speaking, whatever form a club takes either operates at a physical location or via digital storefront (or a combination of both).
Physical Location:
Being based at a physical location carries many benefits as well as risks for your club. A club where members can visit, obtain and consume Cannabis allows for the fun social interactions that come with being in the immediate vicinity of fellow Cannabis loving members. Some Things to Consider for a Physical Club:
Location, Location, Location – when choosing the area for your club, whereas for a normal business, you may want a high foot traffic area with lots of exposure, with a club it would need to be in an area that does not attract attention and where the public (i.e. non-members) does not have easy access. Assuming you do not own the property and you have to rent, certain locations would mean higher rental rates which would need to be factored into your club business model.Landlords – you should rather have an open conversation with a potential landlord about your intentions to open a club. Lying or misrepresenting yourself could lead to disastrous consequences (i.e. police raid) should the landlord discover you are running a club without their consent. Rather spend time finding the right landlord who understands and accepts your club model, which means you may not end up in the area you originally wanted for your club.
Costs of shop fitting – your new club can be an exciting adventure, but be careful not to go overboard by spending your budget on shop fittings, furniture etc. Rather have the mentality of how much are you willing to lose should the club have to close down and then work from that point, remember there might be other more important financial expenses to focus on to ensure the sustainability of your club i.e. rent for a few months before breakeven.
Digital:
A club can operate digitally, which could be as simple as an email-based system or a fully functioning ecommerce website. The digital part of the club can operate exclusively as a standalone club or complementary to the physical location, in either case please remember to treat your digital channel with the same privacy scrutiny as you would with a physical location. Some things to consider:
Website developer – as with any online business you would need to find someone to develop your website, as well as maintain and provide service support should there be any technical issues. It goes without saying that you should choose your developer wisely as they will be privy to a wealth of information about your club and members. There are many off-the-shelf e-commerce ready sites available for purchase but remember they will still need to be tailored to accommodate extra levels of privacy and security needed for a DPC site.Security focused services – it is worth noting that even a simple DPC that communicates via email only to members can be considered a “Digital” club even though there is no website where transactions occur. To help with privacy and security there are a number of free non-traditional Email service companies that prioritise your privacy over monetising your personal information(i.e. ProtonMail).
Hybrid (Physical/Digital):
In an ideal world, a club would have a physical location in addition to a digital storefront, providing an omni-channel distribution model for members to access Cannabis. You should follow the same points raised above for a physical or a digital store, but be aware that a hybrid model brings with it complexity and therefore a greater need for a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) manual, as well as other documentation which we will discuss shortly.Next steps after choosing a model? (Physical/Digital/Hybrid)
In reality a club might start off informally amongst a small group of members and without many management systems in place, and whilst there is nothing wrong with that approach, you may find the need to become more structured and formal as the club grows. We believe you should run a club as you would run a business, so we have spent time putting together information on helping turn your club idea into a sustainable venture. -
