Responsible Adult Use

Responsible Adult Use is both the cornerstone of our legal argument and the umbrella under which all other uses of Cannabis will become legal.

We stress this point over and over again, “Dealers on the street do not ask for ID, but we do”. Every person in the above photograph is over 18 as identity documents are checked at the entrance to all of our events. These events have been opportunities to highlight that the responsible use of Cannabis is happening every day in South Africa. We reserve the right to use, possess, transport, cultivate and trade in the Cannabis plant. The relevance of these rights are broad when considering their importance for the responsible, adult Cannabis consumers who are, at present, persecuted in the privacy of their homes as well as in public and in the workplace. From custody battles to drug testing at work, Cannabis prohibition has controversially become a tool for addressing personal grievances and targeting employee when disputes arrive.

The recent Constitutional Court ruling to decriminalise Cannabis while a step in the right direction has explicitly still forbidden any trade in any cannabis products. Thereby maintaining the black market and not allowing this market to formalise nor receive any form pf protection or regulation. A great deal of work remains to ensure that legalisation becomes a reality for ALL.

We do not advocate the use of Cannabis for those under 18, except in exceptional medical cases. As adults, we also reserve the right to put into our bodies that which we as responsible citizens see fit. We are not harming anyone with our Cannabis use and the continued prohibition of the plant is a violation of our rights under the South African Constitution.

“… the illegality of Cannabis is outrageous, an impediment to the full utilisation of a drug which helps produce the serenity and insight, sensitivity and fellowship so desperately needed in this incresingly mad and dangerous world.” Carl Sagan, Mr X, 1969.

This is a quote from one of the annexures to The Dagga Couple’s High court Affidavit. It is from an essay by the late, great Carl Sagan. To understand our argument in short, please download the full essay HERE.
