As we step into 2026, we’re filled with hope, purpose and gratitude for each of you who stand with us in the struggle for fairness, dignity and justice in South Africa’s cannabis landscape.

This year promises to be a momentous one — especially as we forge ahead with our Police Reform Project, a historic initiative designed to shape the future of policing in a post-prohibition South Africa.

Urgent Call to Community Leaders — Register for 27 February

We are calling on recognised community leaders to participate in a crucial engagement that will shape the future of cannabis policing in South Africa.

Please register only if you intend to make a formal statement on behalf of the community that has elected or mandated you. This process is designed to ensure that community voices are represented responsibly and authentically.

Statements may be submitted in one of the following formats:

  • A written document of no more than 400 words, or
  • A video submission no longer than 3 minutes

Due to very limited space at the venue, we kindly ask that no more than two leaders per organisation attend in person. The meeting will be live-streamed, allowing all community members to watch, engage, and submit comments online.

This is a rare and important opportunity to place community experience, concerns, and expectations directly into the process of developing fair and constitutional policing practices.

Why Police Reform Matters Now

Although cannabis use and cultivation for private purposes have been legalised in South Africa through constitutional rulings and new legislation, many communities continue to face arbitrary enforcement by the police. Lack of clear Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for cannabis policing means people are still stopped, searched, or even arrested — even when their actions are lawful. These practices disproportionately harm marginalised people and undermine the very freedoms our movement fights to protect.

Our Police Reform Project — Policing Post-Prohibition Cannabis in South Africa — aims to:

* Co-develop new SAPS SOPs that are legally aligned, clear and practical;
* Create Civil Society Guidelines shaped directly by community voices;
* Bridge the divide between cannabis-using communities and law enforcement;
* Ensure policing respects human rights, dignity, and justice for all.

This is the first effort of its kind in South Africa — and your voice matters.
