Draft Cannabis Regulations Published for Comment
Here they are folks! The long-awaited Regulations for the Cannabis for Private Purposes Act of 2024 and the call for public comments – deadline 05 March 2026.

At the FGA office we have barely had time to read it in detail but it seems like it only covers possession, plant counting, transport & expungements. Nothing about the children or edibles. Maybe they are waiting for all of our input so they don’t have to do the work.
5 PLANTS EACH!!!

50 + per household, alot of us users use the herb mostly as medicine so there is no way each household can survive on just 5 plants. marijuana is medicine we need in our homes it’s not a want can’t that be strongly considered
Hemp should be totally deregulated and incentives for purchasing raw product from subsistence farmers implemented. This will help boost investments into the production of fabrics, animal feed, cannawood, biodiesel hempcrete etc. The yield is amazing, and perhaps the best benefits is that it is the only plant I know of that is both carbon negative and enriches tired barron land without the need of fertilizer.
We hear you! These regualtions are for the Private purposes Act though.

really all this over a plant just let the people grow its safer than alcohol consumption and will add to the countries revenue as much as alcohol
5plants per person is crazy! the amount of canabis i use i need more than 5 plants, i smoke, i cook, i drink and i even wash with canabis water, there is soooo much healing purposes in the plant, everyday i find out new ways to use the plant and recently i discovered to cook it up and relax your feet in and just let the water over your legs and it works, so i decided why not just bath with it, so now i cook my leafs up and i strain it and i relax in that water and i can’t explain how i feel when getting out of that bath, but all i can say is 5 plants is waaaay to little for all the stuff we do with the plant, why must we be dictated to what we can do in our own yard? on our own property? who do we harm with our trees? why are we treated like criminals for growing trees of healing and meditation, why can’t we just be left alone, we don’t bother anyone, why must we always be targeted???
Time to get to work and prepare our comments on this abysmal set of draft (thank goodness) ‘regulations’! The details on expungement seem to be the only decent element of the draft regs, but most of the rest of the regs are needing strong rejection from our community. Quite ridiculous (but unsurprising) that this is the best they gov can come up with.
Why specifically 5 plants…? How was that decision reached.? It should have been more than what the law currently permits.
Hey There, So this is not law yet. These are draft Regulations. When regulations get published they need to follow a process of public consultion. This is what is now happening. Have your say & submit comments before the deadline!
5 plants is way to little for private use.
At least 10 plants per family member is sufficient, come now I smoke for medicinal purposes , how are we going to survive with 5.
We hear you & agree. Regulations should be based on evidence & science not an arbitrary number.
Regress and policing on private use so they ca. maintain lisencing for commercial use and make money. these are pathetic and regected.
5 plants seems a bit too few. Does this include mature plants, and cuttings/clones?
It doesn’t state where the plants can be grown, ie must they be away from public access (behind wall/fence). What defines a private place?
There’s no mention of selling plants.
Not all cannabis users have excess to land for cultivating cannabis,which creates the dilemma of buying and selling. Law makers should look at such issues when determining Law,because it becomes contradicting.Cannabis a highly lucrative and government must actually help cannabis entrepreneurs from the lower income community’s which will boost the local economy and job creation.
As cannabis growers and users we are not happy about this government gazzet are we included in this or we are just told by the unusers how to conduct ourselves 5 plants can never be enough for how long am I going to have only 5 plants I think 50 plants is what we need from season to season stop fooling us.
Hi Keletso. Yes, we agree that a limit of 5 plants is not very user-friendly. This is why it’s so important that the Cannabis Community submits comments on this DRAFT of the Regulations before the deadline of 5 March 2026. Our voices must be heard and must be taken into account.
are these amendments to the exisiting legislation on cannabis?
Hi Christian. Thanks so much for the question. These are the draft regulations that would eventually enforce the Cannabis for Private Purposes Act that the President signed in May 2024. This is only a *draft*, which is why it’s so important that the community gets their comments in before the March deadline.
