On Friday 27 February, the Human Rights Conference Room at Constitution Hill, Johannesburg, was filled with community voices from around South Africa, as Fields of Green for ALL and Cannabis Africana hosted a national Community Leader Workshop under their Police Reform Project: Policing Post-Prohibition Cannabis in South Africa.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated! The workshop was live-streamed to allow full public access. Reform of this magnitude cannot occur behind closed doors. Despite the usual technical hiccups that accompany any live event (and thank you to everyone for your patience), the workshop was a resounding success.

The objective is clear: we need to align policing practice with constitutional principles and prevent ongoing harm caused by uncertainty and uneven enforcement.

You can watch the recording of the workshop here:

Twenty-five organisations from across South Africa participated through their mandated representatives, with each delivering structured statements grounded in lived experience, from traditional practitioners and small-scale growers to traders, patients, legal experts, and community organisers.

We have decided to extend the invitation to Community Leaders to send us a written submission if you missed the submission deadline for the workshop.
New Deadline: 31 March 2026. Please contact charl@fieldsofgreenforall.org.za or call our helpline if you have any questions.

Fields of Green for ALL’s Police Reform Project now moves into its next phase:

  • Drafting Civil Society Guidelines informed by lived realities as reflected in submissions for the workshop.
  • Observing the initiation of structured dialogue between our experts and law enforcement
  • Co-developing practical, constitutionally aligned SAPS Standard Operating Procedures
  • Advancing policing practices that uphold dignity, legality, and accountability

Post-prohibition South Africa demands clarity. And clarity demands action.
